In this chapter, you realize why the author spent so much time introducing the bishop. In this chapter Jean Valjean and the bishop meet. Jean valjean is so used to being treated so poorly by human society that when he meets the bishop and the bishop treats him with respect and hospitality despite his criminal record, jean valjean is shocked and in disbelief. This chapter really proves the bishops character and devotion to god.
